Nothing but nostalgia with Chip 'n Dale

If you haven't seen the new Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers movie on Disney+ and you grew up watching Disney afternoons, Saturday morning cartoons or Hannah Barbara cartoons, you really gotta find some time to check it out because it'll take you back.

I grew up watching Chip 'n Dale on Disney Channel and was a big fan of Gadget, but thought the chipmunks were cool too, so when they announced they were making a movie I was sort of on the fence. The show wasn't AMAZING, and what was there more to tell? The thing that caught my interest was the fact that John Mulaney was voicing Chip and Andy Samberg would be voicing Dale. The previews made it look fun, you can see in the trailers how the show integrates various properties in the movie and it's a mixture of 2D animation, 3D animation, and live action. So why take the time to watch this movie? Now I'm not saying you have to, but you should.

The story is pretty simple: Chip and Dale have a falling out after the Disney series ended, and they're reunited after one of their friends from the original TV show, Monty, is kidnapped - a very simple plot. However, as someone who has grown up watching cartoons it was so fun to see how they incorporated so many other things from the various animation properties like Hannah Barbara, Adult Swim, Warner Brothers that we has millennials and Gen-X have grown up with. It's fun for us because we know these characters (well I at least knew about 70% of them), and having those characters now be adults like us, going through real life things is very entertaining.

SPOILERS:

The bad guy is a grown up Peter Pan, yes, and he is bitter that he got fires from Disney because he got old and hairy (definitely a nod to Bobby Driscoll,). To make money, he kidnaps beloved characters and reanimates them so they can star in his bootlegged films. Genius. For instance he kidnaps Flounder from The Little Mermaid because he owed him something. Flounder, when he's being kidnapped, tries to get the Valley Gang (the baddies) to take a fork instead of him and says, "this is a genuine dinglehopper! It's wroth a lot! Isn't it neat?" But the Valley gang erase his mouth, changed his figure and put him in a bootlegged version of The Little Mermaid.

Chip 'n Dale have 48 hours to save their friend Monty, before he is also bootlegged! While they're on this mission, they run into other characters you've come to love, they make references you'll know from your childhood and maybe... or maybe you won't, will be on your phone trying to remember where you had seen that character. But try not to, this movie is too fun to pass up.

This movie is safe to watch with kids, and it may even peak their interest in watching the old Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers series which is also available on Disney+. It's a good time, I promise.
