Disney may replace seven dwarves in live action Snow White
Well, yesterday's blog was timely, wasn't it?
On Monday, Peter Dinklage, known for his role in Game of Thrones as Tyrion Lannister, and for the G-rated fans out there, Miles Finch in Elf, spoke on Marc Maron's podcast WTF. In the podcast he criticized Disney on their choice to make a live-action Snow White, praising themselves for casting a Latina as Snow White, while ignoring another group of people represented in the film.
“There’s a lot of hypocrisy going on,” Dinklage said on the podcast. “Literally no offense to anything, but I was a little taken aback they were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White, but you’re still telling the story of ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.’ Take a step back and look at what you’re doing there. It makes no sense to me."
If you're in the small minority who hasn't seen the classic animated version of Snow White or didn't read the title of the movie thoroughly, Snow White is a movie about a young girl named Snow White whose stepmother basically want to kill her because Snow White is the "fairest of them all." Snow White runs away from her wicked stepmother and runs into seven dwarves who are miners. She moved into their cottage and teaches them manners and in return, they save her from her evil stepmother.
Dinklage during his career has worked to avoid being cast in roles that are stereotypes and has gone for more serious roles, earning himself four Emmys, as well as many other awards and nominations.
In response to Dinklage's statement on the podcast, Disney gave us a taste of what they will be doing to be more progressive for their upcoming live-action film. In a statement to USA Today, Disney said:
“To avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community. We look forward to sharing more as the film heads into production after a lengthy development period.”
Reports are saying that the dwarves may be replaced with "magical creatures" but I have yet to find a statement that Disney confirms this, or that Disney is looking for various voice actors to be the voices of CGI characters. Disney has been very careful about how groups are represented, so it is no surprise Disney is taking every step possible to make this film comfortable for everyone to watch.
