Who is the Black Knight?! (only read if you've seen Eternals)
We see Dane very nervous about opening up a box and when he finally does we see a black sword inside, very King Arther type stuff. As he reaches into the box to get the sword, we hear someone ask, "are you sure you're ready for that Mr. Whitman?" Chloe Zhao (the director of Eternals) confirmed that was Blade. (more on him later). But from that and the sword, which we can guess is his uncle's sword called Ebony, that Dane is the Black Knight, but who is this? And what's with the sword?
Side note: Kit Harrington just keeps getting pulled back into playing a person with a medieval times vibe doesn't he? But I am here for it.
Simple explanation: The Black Knight is a good guy (once a bad guy) how teams up with the Avengers and then the Ultraforce. And the sword Ebony makes you angry and want to kill people the longer you have it!
So we know that John Snow... ahem I mean Dane inherited the sword from his uncle, Nathan Garrett, who in the comics actually gave the sword to Dane to become the Black Knight because Iron Man mortally wounded him. Turns out, Dane doesn't want to be a villain, so he tries to be a good guy and fight the baddies. He goes as far as to try and stop Magneto, which seems counterproductive since he uses a metal sword. But there's still distrust, as a lot of heroes still see the Black Knight as a villain, thinking that Dane's uncle is still the Black Knight. He eventually gains some trust with the Avengers and helps them out actually fighting with them a handful of times.
In the comics, he's seen with the Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum's character in Thor) and Kang, which we know is the new baddie in at least Loki. Dane actually takes down Kang when the Avengers and himself are forced into Kang's future. Because he does this, the Avengers ask him to join their team, and he of course happily accepts.
However, the sword Ebony makes him hungry for violence. He tries to get rid of it and eventually does after getting involved in Scarlett Witch's dreams. The sword is never destroyed but gets lost in time. Then through a series of events, Dane ends up back in time, and Merlin (yes the wizard Merlin) makes him the OG Black Knight. Dane is oddly OK with this and stays there, but sort of has to because the Defenders end up back in time with him, and to save them and get them back to future New York, he stays behind.
Eventually, he gets back to the present, joins Sersi, and becomes the leader of her group called the Ultraforce. Then he and Sersi break up (spoiler) and he joins this little organization called "Heroes for Hire," which kind of sounds like a job agency, and that's where we last learned he was at.
Who knows where the MCU is going to take this guy? But I love Kit Harrington so I'm excited to see him join this LARGE cast of superheroes.
